Sirtfood Diet
Consume foods rich in polyphenols that activate sirtuins (intracellular proteins linked to metabolism and longevity). Phase 1: caloric restriction + green juices. Phase 2: three sirtfoods meals + green juice per day.
The Sirtfood Diet is a dietary approach created by British nutritional consultants Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten, based on the idea of consuming foods rich in polyphenols that activate sirtuins — intracellular proteins linked to metabolism, inflammation and longevity.
The diet achieved extraordinary media attention after being associated with Adele’s weight loss transformation in 2020. It consists of two phases: Phase 1 (3 days at 1,000 kcal, 4 days at 1,500 kcal — green juices + one meal per day) and Phase 2 (2 weeks, three sirtfood meals + one juice per day). Maintenance uses sirtfoods as the nutritional basis.
The scientific position: sirtuin research is real but preliminary, especially in humans. Rapid Phase 1 weight loss is largely water and glycogen. The 20 key sirtfoods — kale, rocket, dark chocolate, red wine, olive oil, coffee, blueberries and others — are genuinely nutritious foods rich in antioxidants, regardless of the sirtuin mechanism.
History and origin
Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten, both British nutritional consultants, developed the Sirtfood concept after reviewing academic literature on sirtuins — proteins discovered in the early 2000s whose links to caloric restriction and longevity in animal models generated significant scientific interest. Notable researchers in the field include David Sinclair at Harvard, whose work on sirtuins and resveratrol was widely publicised.
Goggins and Matten first applied the concept at the KX Gym in Chelsea, London, testing the protocol on 40 clients over a pilot study. They published the results — an average weight loss of 7 lb in 7 days — in their book The Sirtfood Diet (2016). The claims were not peer-reviewed clinical trials, but the book sold well and attracted celebrity interest.
The global explosion came in 2020 when Adele was photographed dramatically slimmer and media reports attributed her transformation to the Sirtfood Diet. The book immediately jumped to the top of bestseller lists in multiple countries, and demand was so high that some publishers ran out of copies. The media coverage far exceeded what the scientific evidence warranted, a pattern typical of celebrity-associated diets in the social-media era.

- Foods not on the sirtfood list are not forbidden but deprioritised
+ Sample one-day menu
+ Pros and cons
Pros
- Emphasises nutritious, polyphenol-rich foods
- Includes enjoyable foods (dark chocolate, red wine)
- Not an excessively restrictive approach after Phase 1
Cons
- Phase 1 (1,000–1,500 kcal/day) is very low in calories
- Sirtuin evidence in humans is limited and preliminary
- The 7 lb (3.2 kg) loss in a week is largely water
- The diet was created by nutritional consultants for celebrities, not researchers
+ ⚠️ Who should avoid this diet
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- People on anticoagulants (many sirtfoods interact with warfarin)
- Not recommended without medical supervision for people with chronic diseases
Indicative list. Before starting any diet, especially if you have a medical condition, consult a doctor or nutritionist.

What are sirtuins?
Sirtuins are a family of intracellular proteins (SIRT1–SIRT7) involved in regulating metabolism, stress response, inflammation and aging. Research in animals has shown associations with longevity and metabolic health. In humans, the evidence is preliminary and much of the sirtuin research has been conducted in cell cultures or animals, not clinical trials.
Is Adele's weight loss due to the Sirtfood Diet?
Adele was publicly associated with the Sirtfood Diet around her weight loss, which generated enormous media attention for the programme. However, it is not confirmed that the diet was the sole or primary cause of her transformation — other lifestyle changes may have been involved.
Why is red wine on the list of sirtfoods?
Red wine contains resveratrol — a polyphenol associated in animal studies with sirtuin activation. The recommended amount is 1 glass per day. Note: the health benefits of resveratrol in red wine for humans are a subject of ongoing scientific debate.
