Dukan Diet

Very high protein, almost no fat and no carbohydrates in the early phases, with gradual reintroduction of vegetables and other foods. The four phases: Attack, Cruise, Consolidation, Stabilisation.

The Dukan diet is a high-protein, very-low-fat diet organised in four phases — from the very strict (pure protein) to long-term maintenance. It was developed by French physician Pierre Dukan and achieved extraordinary global popularity in the 2000s.

The mechanism: very high protein intake produces strong satiety, maintains muscle mass and increases thermogenesis (the body uses more energy to digest protein than other macronutrients). In the early phases, carbohydrates and fats are almost completely eliminated.

Despite commercial success, the Dukan diet is controversial in the nutrition community: it is very restrictive, strains the kidneys with excess protein, and the long-term risk of weight regain is significant. The French National Nutritional Health Programme explicitly recommended against it as a dietary approach for the general population.

History and origin

Pierre Dukan, a French physician specialising in neurology who later moved to nutrition, developed the diet over several decades of work with patients with obesity. He began testing high-protein protocols in the 1970s, inspired partly by Robert Atkins, but eliminated fat from the equation — an aspect he considered problematic in the Atkins approach. He described the protocol to patients informally for years before publishing it in book form.

The book Je ne sais pas maigrir (I Don’t Know How to Get Thin) was published in France in 2000 and became a publishing phenomenon: it sold millions of copies in France and was translated into 32 languages. The English version, The Dukan Diet, appeared in 2010 and reached the top of bestseller lists in the UK and United States. Dukan claimed over 40 million followers worldwide.

The celebrity-endorsement moment came when it became publicly known that Kate Middleton and her mother had followed the Dukan diet before the royal wedding in 2011 — a detail that generated enormous global press coverage and drove a new wave of interest. In Romania, the diet reached peak popularity in 2011–2013 through translations and local editions.

Dukan was subsequently controversial: the French Medical Association investigated him for commercially promoting dietary practices, and in 2012 his name was removed from the official register of doctors following a ruling by the French Medical Council — a rare and significant sanction in the medical community.

Întrebări frecvente

What are the four phases of the Dukan diet?

Phase 1 — Attack (pure protein, 2–7 days); Phase 2 — Cruise (alternating pure protein days and protein + vegetable days); Phase 3 — Consolidation (gradual reintroduction of fruit, bread, cheese); Phase 4 — Stabilisation (maintenance for life, with one pure protein day per week).

Why is the Dukan diet controversial?

Because it is very restrictive, with a high risk of kidney strain and nutritional deficiencies, and because long-term clinical evidence for its safety and efficacy is limited. The French National Nutritional Health Programme recommended against it for reasons of nutritional imbalance.

Is the Dukan diet different from the Atkins diet?

Both are low-carb and high-protein, but Dukan restricts fat as well (unlike Atkins, which encourages fat), and has a stricter structure of phases. Atkins is low-carb/high-fat; Dukan is high-protein/low-fat/low-carb.
